Welcome to Stromberg Shipping Lines
Welcome to Stromberg Shipping Lines. The company's operations are based at Aspretto, at the head of the Gulf of Ajaccio in Corsica, where the yard and the marine research division have their premises, and from which the company's Mediterranean and coastwise services are worked.
Stromberg Shipping Lines was founded at Aspretto and remains a Corsican undertaking. The company is engaged in the transportation of crude oil, refined products and dry bulk cargoes, and in the coastwise trades of the Corsican and Mediterranean coasts. The Hamburg office, opened later to handle the northern trades and the fixing of cargoes, is the head office; technical management, crewing and purchasing are conducted there. Agencies and bunkering arrangements are maintained at Bastia, Marseille, Tangier and Bizerte.
Stromberg Shipping Lines is a privately held company. Commercial enquiries should be directed to the Chartering Department; technical enquiries, to the Marine Superintendent.

Marine Research Division
The Marine Research Division is based at the company's yard at Aspretto, at the head of the Gulf of Ajaccio, where its laboratories and tanks — the Aspretto Marine Laboratory — are provided ashore, and the company's submersibles are available for at-sea work. The division's work is carried out in the fields of hydrodynamics, underwater acoustics, submersible operations and long-duration submerged habitation. The waters of the Gulf of Ajaccio and the shelf to the west of the island, being sheltered and deep close inshore, have been used by the division for trials since its establishment.
Project Atlantis
The division's principal programme, Project Atlantis, concerns the engineering of submerged structures for extended habitation, and the systems required to support them. The division does not accept unsolicited research proposals, and does not make its findings available to third parties.
Submersibles and trials
The company designs, builds and operates submersibles for survey, inspection and research work. Trials are undertaken in the Gulf of Ajaccio and in the waters off the Sanguinaires; the trials areas are marked and are not open to other traffic. Particulars are given in the company's standing notice to mariners, obtainable from the yard office.
Diving and underwater works
The division's diving section undertakes underwater inspection, hull cleaning, salvage and underwater works in the Mediterranean and elsewhere, and instruction in diving and underwater procedure. Plant includes a decompression chamber, diving launches, and the covered berths at the Aspretto yard.
Technical services
The technical services department works from the Aspretto yard, with drawing office and workshops ashore, and undertakes the design, supply and installation of underwater detection and tracking equipment, both for the fitting of vessels and for shore stations.
| Item | Particulars |
|---|---|
| Detection and tracking | Design, supply and installation; shipborne and shore station |
| Hydrographic survey | Seabed survey and recording, Corsican waters and elsewhere |
| Installation | At Aspretto, or at the establishment of the client |
| Training | Instruction of client personnel in operation and maintenance |
Government work and the establishment
The yard and division have for many years undertaken work for government departments and agencies, including the fitting out of small craft, underwater works, and the instruction of departmental personnel in diving and underwater procedure. Personnel for this work are drawn from the diving section and, as required, from officers and rating staff with experience of service in government establishments. The establishment is enclosed and access is restricted. The company does not disclose the identity of departments for which work is undertaken, and particulars of such work are not published.
Facilities
- Fitting-out quay; slipway and cradle for the lifting of submersibles and small craft
- Heavy-lift crane, formerly employed in the lifting of flying boats, now on submersibles and heavy machinery
- Machine shop, plate shop and electrical shop in the old aircraft hangars
- Diving section, with decompression chamber, diving launches and plant
- Covered berths for the company's submersibles and diving craft

Personnel
Applications for positions in the division, the diving section and the technical services department should be made on the company's application form and sent by post to the Personnel Department, or to the Ajaccio office. Applications by electronic mail cannot be accepted. Personnel of the division and of the yard wear the division's badge on working dress. Positions at the establishment and in the diving section are subject to clearance, and applicants should give particulars of any service in the armed forces or in government establishments.
